History
The band was founded by drummer Eric Emde. In 1992,
he began to develop the concept of the Vic
High R&B band for inclusion in the Victoria High School
music cirriculum to replace the stage band which had been the educational
standard for over 25 years.
As music director for the school, Emde wanted to
create a course that would fit with the school's mandate of programs
designed for job readiness. In keeping with shifts in the
music industry, Emde understood that this repertoire would be more
in keeping with current values in the workplace.
As the program developed and interest from students
mushroomed, he decided to create a professional version of the group.
Using the same repertoire, he sought out pro players that were agreeable
to the idea of including present and former students. The idea was
to provide mentoring and an opportunity to integrate young performers
into a professional performing outfit.
Interest in the group spread among the community
and the group found itself in high demand at civic and sporting
events, conferences and dances.
“I never expected it to take off like
it did. We play the kind of music we always wanted, and people just
love it.” says Emde when asked about the success of the group.
“I guess it's just an idea who's time has come.”
